GARDEN KNOW-HOW

Simple guides for smarter watering

A good watering routine starts with understanding your plants, soil, climate and garden layout.

How often should you water?

There is no single schedule for every garden. Check soil moisture before watering, consider recent rainfall and adjust for temperature, wind, container size and plant type. Water deeply when needed rather than relying on a rigid daily schedule.

Watering early in the day

Morning watering generally gives plants time to take up moisture while reducing prolonged overnight leaf wetness. Aim water at the soil where practical, rather than spraying foliage.

Drip irrigation basics

Drip systems deliver water near plant roots through tubing and emitters. They can be useful for raised beds, rows and containers. Check emitters regularly for clogs, leaks and uneven flow, and adapt the layout to each plant’s needs.

Keep an eye on soil moisture

Soil type affects how quickly water drains. Sandy soils often dry faster, while heavier soils may hold moisture longer. Use a finger test or a suitable moisture meter and avoid waterlogged roots.
